During the hot weather several light washing dresses are needed for the voyage sleeveless silk frocks are most suitable for the time from Suez to Singapore as they can be easily washed and ironed. Rubber soled shoes are useful for deck games, and a pair of dark coloured light shoes for hot wet weather. Thin evening frocks are worn for dinner a fancy dress is useful. A thin wrap or coat is useful in the evenings.
Not required.
White piqué overalls
can be made in 24 hours after arrival. A serge nurse's cloak (navy blue) about 33 inches long, lined red, is desirable. White pull-overs are useful to wear under uniforms in the cold weather. White canvas shoes with rubber heels are required for duty. Feet get swollen in the hot weather, so comfortable shoes are essential. If possible it is useful to leave particulars at home of sizes and makes of shoes, and measure- ments for frocks etc. so that, if and when desired, goods may be sent out.
During the cold weather (Dec. Jan. and
light woollies and tweeds are worn and cloth or fur coats. Light coloured cotton or silk washing frocks are worn for tennis and golf and for bathing picnics in the summer. Thin cotton underclothing is best. Silk underclothing for cooler weather is good and comparatively cheap here. Two afternoon and two evening frocks are useful. European shoes are expensive an and many people cannot wear locally made ones.
A Cabin Trunk or small Wardrobe Trunk and a Suitcase are required for the cabin and a hat box if desired. A steel or tin-lined trunk is useful for storing things on the voyage and during the damp summer months here.
A deck chair is not really necessary as they are now supplied by the P. & 0. and there is very little room in the Sisters Quarters for storing deck chairs. A rug and cushion are desirable.
